On
the 8th of January, the ICNK held a press conference for ICNK
International Action Day at the Press Center in Seoul. The ICNK
urged for the establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry to examine
the North Korean regimes crimes against humanity. The 8 member
organizations based in Korea following the press conference visited
the US Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and
delivered a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and
Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan.
At
the press interview, Kim Tae Hoon, a former commissioner of North
Korean human rights in the National Human Rights Commission of Korea,
emphasized that "right now at this moment, human rights of many
people in North Korea are infringed by being imprisoned and tortured
without any proper legal procedure." He also insisted that, "The
North Korean regime cannot be changed by itself, so, through a COI,
these crimes have to be found, and the criminals responsible need to
be brought before the International Court of Justice so that these
kinds of tragic incidents can be stopped."
Ha
Tae Kyung, the Saenuri Party assemblyman, explained the method of
establishing the COI by saying that, "there is a way to
establish the COI through a resolution in the UN Human Rights
Commission, UN General Assembly and UN Security Council." He
also added that, "in March 2011, a COI, which was established
through the UN Human Rights Commission and commissioned by the UN Security Council, sent Libya's Gaddafi Regime
to the International Criminal Court."
On
the same day, ICNK member organizations in 10 countries, France,
Canada, UK, and so on, had a meeting with their countries' foreign
ministers and delivered an NGO letter, which urges for the
establishment of a COI.
