Efforts to bring perpetrators to justice key to improving North Korea human rights situation: U.N. chief

In the September 25-dated report to the U.N. General Assembly, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the international community to take all possible and reasonable efforts to ensure that the systematic, widespread, and grave human rights violations described in the report of the commission of inquiry are brought to an end.

In addition, Ban stated, Efforts to engage the government of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to improve the human rights situation in the country must go hand in hand with efforts to hold the  perpetrators of crimes accountable.

Ban also made a series of recommendations urging the North to take concrete steps to improve the situation, such as inviting the U.N. Special Rapporteur to visit the country, engaging meaningfully with all U.N. member states, and providing unimpeded access to U.N. and humanitarian agencies.

According to Yonhap news, it would constitute a significant development for the U.N. Security Council to take up the Norths human rights violations as part of their agenda.
