UN security council urged to target North Korean officials over atrocities

Michael Kirby, the head of the Commission of Inquiry into human rights violations in North Korea, recently called on the U.N. Security Council to slap targeted sanctions on those responsible for crimes against humanity in the country, and to refer them to the International Criminal Court.

Mr. Kirby gave his remarks at an informal meeting of the security council convened by Australia, France, and the United States. Neither North Korea, China, nor Russia had a representative present at the meeting.

While the Commission of Inquiry's recent report was praised by several U.N. member states and human rights organizations, it was completely rejected by North Korea and China. Furthermore, any recommendations in the report are likely to face fierce opposition from China once they come before the U.N. Security Council.
