North Korean Teens Arrested for Watching South Korean Films Amid Crackdowns
Two teenage brothers in Sinuiju, North Pyongan Province, were arrested by an anti-socialist and non-socialist task force for watching South Korean films, according to a reporting partner.
The parents had warned them against watching the films due to harsh punishments. The brothers were taken to a police detention center and interrogated separately. Their parents are now trying to raise money, even selling their house, in an attempt to bribe authorities to free their children.
The reporting partner noted that North Korean teenagers are increasingly interested in South Korean films and dramas, and intensified crackdowns will only enrich enforcers as the popularity of such media continues to rise.
