According to the Daily NK, North Korean citizens were able to watch the South Korean presidential elections through Chinese broadcasts. As a result of the broadcasts, the news of Park Geun Hyes victory in the election has rapidly spread throughout North Korean society.

A Daily NK source reported that North Korean people in North Hamkyung Province and Yangkang Province watched the South Korean presidential elections through Chinese Yanbian TV broadcasts . The citizens reactions to the result was said to be of disbelief.

North Korean people already knew about Park Geun Hye since she visited North Korea in 2002.  On the run-up to the election, the Rodong Shinmun reported on her standing as a candidate for the presidency. However, people did not imagine that she could be elected as a president, the source said.

The source suggested that this South Korean presidential election will influence the patriarchal and male-dominated North Korean society a lot.
