A group of UN independent human rights experts have called for an international inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea during the 22nd session of the Human Rights Council.

The group included: the Special Rapporteur on human rights in the DPRK, Marzuki Darusman; El-Hadji Malick Sow, chair of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention; experts from the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances; the Special Rapporteur on summary, arbitrary and extrajudicial executions, Christof Heyns; and Special Rapporteur on torture, Juan E. Méndez.

Marzuki Darusman, who will present a report during the session, said, I call on the UN Member States to set up an inquiry into grave, systematic and widespread violations of human rights in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, and to recommend ways to ensure accountability for possible crimes against humanity.

The experts outlined the basics of the human rights problems in North Korea during their call for an inquiry. They also described the punishments meted out to transgressors of North Korean law.
