The 'Day of the Sun' is the formal name for the April 15th
commemoration of Kim Il Sung's birth. This year, however, the day was not
very bright, as there was no special distribution of foods for many
North Korean citizens, according to the Daily NK.
The North Korean government usually distributes
gifts to the people on this special day, as a way to strengthen the bond
between the state and the citizens, and to show the generosity
and benevolence of the leaders. Rice, oil, and bottles of alcohol are
given to the adults, while children receive cookies and snacks. But it
seems that this year only the children got treats.
