With tensions mounting on the Korean peninsula, large numbers of North Koreans are again trying to flee their country, according to a recent news article by The Examiner.
As North Koreans cross into neighboring China, they are met with anything but open arms. China actively seeks out North Korean refugees and forcibly repatriates them. No one knows for sure how many of these refugees China has sent back to North Korea.
Once returned to North Korea, these refugees face abuse, mistreatment, torture, incarceration, and sometimes even death. And even though it violates their duty as a party to the International Refugees Convention and Protocol, China continues its cruel repatriation policy.
It also appears that China is more aggressively attempting to arrest even the North Koreans who are simply trying to reach a third country.
As bad as the situation is in China, conditions are worse inside North Korea, which is why countless North Koreans continue to flee their country, regardless of how difficult or dangerous that might be.
