The Kiribatian President has confirmed that the island country in the South Pacific did in fact sell passports to North Koreans. The news of the passport sales was reported in December last year by Australia's ABC News.

Two North Korean officials were given the passports in 1996. It has been alleged that the passports were used to facilitate arms trade and other illicit dealings for the regime's coffers.

Kiribati, mindful of the possible use of the passports in illicit activities, ended the sale of passports in 2004.
