In an effort to raise funds to beautify Yangkang Province, described as the home of Kim Jong Il, women have been mobilized to pick blueberries. Open dissatisfaction has been reported with one source saying “They need funds for city works projects… but it is just us ordinary people who suffer.” The women are obligated to pick up to 10kg of blueberries per day. The fruit is then sold to foreign-currency earning enterprises where it is processed and exported.
