Eighty Executions for Bibles and Videos

This month, as many as eighty people were publicly executed for such offenses as watching South Korean movies or possessing a Bible. These executions took place in seven cities across North Korea, including the port city of Wonsan. Most of those in Wonsan were charged with watching or illegally trafficking South Korean videos, involvement in prostitution, or possessing a Bible. Family members or accomplices of the execution victims were sent to prison camps.

While North Korea has been conducting public executions for decades, this is the first known large-scale public executions by the Kim Jong-un regime. North Korean law allows for executions for such crimes as conspiring to overthrow the government, treason, and terrorism, but the country has also been known to order public executions for minor infractions such as religious activism, cellphone use, and stealing food, in an effort to intimidate the public.
