UNICEF reported that the death rate for children under the age of 5 in North Korea in 2012 ranked 77th among 194 countries in the world. This means that 29 out of every 1000 children are dying.

According to UNICEFs report, Committing to Child Survival, the death rate for boys is higher than for girls. The biggest reasons for death are congenital malformations and intrapartum complications, among other things. The accumulated death toll for children under the age of 1 in North Korea last year was about 8000. Also, the number of newborn infants who died last year was 5000.
