Campaigning, lobbying, and conducting academic research etc., the number of North Korean human rights related organizations has reached over 40 throughout the world. On the 26th of July, the Institute for National Security Strategy shared that between America, Europe, Japan, Brazil and other countries there are currently 41 active organizations, all of which are working to improve North Koreans human rights. America accounts for 22 of the organizations, Europe has reached 11 and Japan has four, with the other four organizations in other countries such as Brazil and Canada.

With the mid 90s starvation crisis and following defector situation, NGOs started emerging one after another. Then at the turn of the century the UNs North Korean Human Rights Resolution helped NGOs started to gain momentum. By raising petitions, meeting with committee members and protesting in front of embassies the organizations have effectively pressed their government into a greater role in the North Korean human rights campaign. Recently, NGOs have been joining together for an even greater impact on the North Korean human rights campaign.
