The ban on foreigners who are visiting North Korea carrying cell phones has been lifted, a Chinese media group have reported. Foreigners visiting North Korea had to leave all cell phones behind at customs when visiting the country. The ban was lifted on the 7th.

Xinhua News Agency reported that an Egyptian technician who works for Koryolink, the joint Egyptian-North Korean communications project, said that the ban had been lifted.

At the present time, foreigners still have to use a SIM card sold by Koryolink to make international calls, and local calls are still prohibited. It is expected that a mobile internet service for foreigners will be introduced in the near future.

In spite of the ban being lifted, North Koreans themselves still have severe restrictions placed upon their ownership of cell phones.
