A South Korean government official said on Tuesday that analog broadcasting will continue so that North Koreans can continue to watch South Korean TV.

The South is currently in the process of changing to digital broadcasting. The North has not followed suit. The decision to continue broadcasting analog signals was made during a meeting between related agencies.

Watching foreign broadcasts is illegal in North Korea. However, defectors have testified that they were able to receive foreign broadcasts and watch the programs.

The government official said that the reason for the decision was that there had been concerns raised about the inability of North Koreans to watch South Korean TV if analog broadcasting was completely stopped.
