The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution on North Korean human rights. The resolution condemned the North Korean regime for their systematic, widespread and grave violations of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights."
The recent adoption of the resolution is a continuation of the UNs efforts to cease the violations. The UN General Assembly has adopted such a resolution every year since 2005. The latest EU-drafted resolution is unique in that it is the first time that such a resolution has passed without a vote.
The Norths delegation to the UN decried the resolution as an "act of the [sic] state political terrorism." The delegate also stated that the resolution was an attempt at "interference in internal affairs."
The passing of the resolution follows recent comments by the Norths delegation to the UN of their pride in their human rights record. Before the passing of the resolution, the Norths delegate rejected Marzuki Darusmans report of human rights in North Korea.
